Berirouche Feddal
studio@berirouche.ca

Born in Rouiba in 1996 and raised between Algiers and Irdjen, his parents’ Kabyle village, Berirouche Feddal was ten when he landed in Pointe-aux-Trembles, at the eastern tip of Tiohtià:ke. He now works between Montréal, London and Algiers, and is pursuing an MFA at Goldsmiths. His practice is a souk where nothing settles: abstract and figurative, object and performance, war and colour, Pan-Africanism and its violence. Stadium chants become protest songs; gold and wheat ask to be worshipped. He works with what time leaves behind: rusted objects, henna rusting in the elders' hair, relics of childhood that hide inherited horrors. Kardoune, devotional symbols and burned wood carry the voices of parents and villagers, the afterlives of colonial history, the ghosts that refuse to leave. His colour began underfoot, on his grandmother's carpets. His work talks to the dead, leaves space empty, and allows itself to forget.

La Spoliation du Souk 2022
The Conseil des arts de Montréal offered artist Colas Eko carte blanche to invite an artist of his generation to exhibit in the mezzanine of the Maison du Conseil. Eko selected Berirouche Feddal, whose work draws on popular culture, traces of myth and religion, colonial history and his own migration story. Feddal works from his own life and memory, mixing discoveries, anecdotes and, at times, revolt. He traces his Amazigh origins through a collection of biographical photographs, blending past and present in a body of work that can be seen as fragmented self-portraits, evoking the fragility of memories and the marks left by our past experiences.

In La Spoliation du Souk, his work draws connections between artifacts from the past that bear witness to the dexterity and ingenuity of agrarian peoples, on the one hand, and their counterparts from the world of knockoffs and mass production, on the other. Feddal revisits selected objects from souks around the world to reinvent and transform their forms and techniques, while questioning the artisan’s place in the contemporary souk. The work also looks at the arrival of petrochemicals in the practices of his grandmother, which changed ways of making and consuming in Kabylia, as elsewhere in the world. Beyond the effects of cultural exchange on the traditional objects of the Mediterranean Basin, the exhibition explores how these ancient objects have been appropriated in a contemporary context and circulated around the world.

The two artists established a dialogue touching on both their personal practices and the venue itself, the Maison du Conseil des arts de Montréal, whose heritage architecture becomes the setting for the works. The mezzanine becomes a discursive extension of the works, a space of dialogue where ideas, forms and objects come together.
