Berirouche Feddal

Born in Rouiba in 1996 and raised between Algiers and Irdjen, his parents’ Kabyle village, Berirouche Feddal was ten when he landed in Pointe-aux-Trembles, at the eastern tip of Tiohtià:ke. He now works between Montréal, London and Algiers, and is pursuing an MFA at Goldsmiths. His practice is a souk where nothing settles: abstract and figurative, object and performance, war and colour, Pan-Africanism and its violence. Stadium chants become protest songs; gold and wheat ask to be worshipped. He works with what time leaves behind: rusted objects, henna rusting in the elders' hair, relics of childhood that hide inherited horrors. Kardoune, devotional symbols and burned wood carry the voices of parents and villagers, the afterlives of colonial history, the ghosts that refuse to leave. His colour began underfoot, on his grandmother's carpets. His work talks to the dead, leaves space empty, and allows itself to forget.

i  :  i think an ‘if’ is like an invitation to refute or to be proved wrong …
like a way of offering a surrender to the possibility of an outcome being the opposite of
what you originally thought …
“if this happens , then i ______” …. “if i do this , then _____ might happen”
“if i do this , what happens if you do that ?”
Daebie , Jorge , Berirouche , Chaline , Bas T. Hin : five ‘ifs’ colliding with
alchemical intention to form a whole
five ‘ifs’ make an even bigger ‘if’
calcio , their host …
yet another ‘if’ …
in this ongoing ‘if’ the artists find themselves in , this drift  (if you will)
coalesces into a dialogue traversing
identity politics ,
deviations the self ,
variations of lies ,
variations of truths ,
unrecognisable histories and
possible solutions for an uncertain future where the ‘if’ formulates the code for
a possible
oasis …
only if , of course , it happens …
(meandering = utopia ? maybe , maybe not …)
ii  :  using an ‘if’ saves us from being wrong …
“i said ‘if’ !!”
a welcoming aperture ,it invites us to dream …
with an ‘if’ , we avoid certainty , and settle into the multiplicity …
we allow the butterflies’ wings to do the flapping
and decide for us … for the probability of the
the mutation to take hold
so the ‘if’ becomes a fate conjuror …
“if i do this , i’m not sure what will happen next …”
and so now … five ‘ifs’ decided to show work together … their practices elliptically
relate to one another … hence the ‘if’ … if these ‘ifs’ did a show centered around the ‘if’ , it would
probably look something like this …
iii  :a final anecdote : ‘if’ is often accompanied by ‘when’ as a way of implying
consequential possibility over certainty …
“when - i mean - if you do it , then ______” …
if or when it happens will be decided by fate , it depends on the ‘it’ …
